A parallel award to the Turner Prize.
A political demonstration & protest against the exclusion of proletariats from the ownership of top quality contemporary art.

The Stomach Turner Prize has repeatedly been assumed to be, but is very much NOT AGAINST THE TURNER PRIZE. Liking or disliking the art in the Turner Prize doesn’t matter. Seeing Tate’s description of the Turner Prize as true or false doesn’t matter. The Turner Prize is a valuable asset to Britain and an institution of significant artistic value.

What’s The Stomach Turner Prize? Antidote to the relentless conveyor belt of instantly forgettable humdrummers dressed up as “outstanding” by Tate every year in their dozy Turner Prize lamefest? You decide:

Any artist recognised as worthy by the Black Ivory Printmaking & Audio Club may be shortlisted for The Stomach Turner Prize as long as what they’re being selected for has been publicly exhibited or performed in the last year, outside the main establishment channels.

Black Ivory is a printmaking & audio club from Muswell Hill, London. They meet and broadcast their music and art performances in a weekly video podcast See blackivory.org

Unlike the Turner Prize, the winner of The Stomach’s is already selected and announced by the time it goes public. Only a handful of people associated with Black Ivory know where and when the exhibition is. Attendees of The Stomach Turner Prize 2024 Exhibition are treated to free art, poetry readings and live music from Black Ivory’s resident group Edgeworth Band.

The presentation of The Stomach Turner Prize however, is a public affair held outside Tate Britain on December 3rd, coinciding with the venue and date of the Turner Prize.

The winner of The Stomach Turner Prize gets a trophy, handmade by by Black Ivory Printmaking & Audio Club in their Muswell Hill, London studio.
